? 2001 subaru outback , 4 cyl. auto trans. Engine knocks upon cold start.?

Depend on how loud it is. Its normal for these engines to "rattle" a bit in cold weather, especially as the miles pile up. I've had 5 subarus, and all have had this to some degree. Probably just normal piston slap.
