How do i create a WoW Hunter macro?

hi. i need to create a macro in WoW. i tried looking on WoWWiki and various other sites but all they do is confuse the hell outta me. i'm a night elf hunter. what i basically need to do is have my pet go into prowl mode every time i attack a target. alternatively a simplified explanation of macros would be nice :) cheers chaps
